Irene M. Ackerman, age 95, of Madison, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2016 at the Hickory Creek of Madison. Born December 15, 1920 in Madison, she was the daughter of George Andrew and Mary Catherine (Schneider) Zepf.
Mrs. Ackerman was a life-long resident of Madison. She graduated from the former Saint Mary's Business School, and worked for the former Indiana Telephone Company and as the librarian at Pope John Elementary School. She began working as the receptionist for the former Madison First Federal Savings and Loan Association in 1974 and retired in December 1997. Following her retirement, she worked for the Pope John Child Care Center.
Mrs. Ackerman was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and its Ladies Club. She loved to travel, read, shop and "be fashionable." During her life, she taught English to Spanish students at the public library, tutored and otherwise helped at Pope John Elementary School. She was distantly related to Irene Dunne.
She will be sadly missed by three nieces: Patsy Ackerman, Betsy Clark and Mary Haverfield; five nephews: Rick, Joseph and Mike Zepf, and Michael and George Ackerman; and her close, personal friends, the DeVeary family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oscar Ackerman, who died on April 23, 1974, and to whom she was married on February 12, 1949 at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Madison; and one brother, Rick Zepf.
The Reverend Christopher Craig will conduct the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, with interment to follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery.
Friends and family may call at Prince of Peace Catholic Church from 9:00 to 11:00 AM Thursday.
