Ethel Louise Shockley died peacefully surrounded by her family at Community South Hospital on January 15th in Greenwood, Indiana at the age of 77.
Ethel is survived by her brother David, nieces Sara and Jen, and her nephew Dan, all of Indianapolis. She is preceded in death by her parents Everett and Myra Shockley, and her younger sister Barbara, from Madison, Indiana.
Ethel was born and raised in Madison, working as a waitress at the Clifty Inn and as an aide at Madison State Hospital. After graduation from Madison High School in 1957, she moved to Indianapolis to study nursing at IUPUI. She worked as an RN at Winona Memorial Hospital until retiring in 2003. While Ethel never married or had children of her own, she was extremely fond of her nieces and nephew and made sure to be present for significant life events. She is remembered as a loving, supportive, generous aunt who took a special interest in their education and upbringing and encouraged them to pursue their goals. Ethel also remained close to her younger brother David throughout her life.
Ethel had a sparkling wit and was quick to laugh and smile. She loved bringing the family together for special occasions or surprising people with thoughtful gifts or greeting cards, long after such niceties had largely gone out of style. She also enjoyed sharing her joy for literature, theatre, travel, and culture with her family and friends. Ethel will be remembered for her grace, generosity, intelligence, and sense of humor by all who knew her, and will be missed dearly.
