Life Story for Nathan John Hadley

Nathan John Hadley
Nathan John Hadley of Madison, Indiana, died June 1, 2017, at the age of 45, after a long battle with chronic depression.

Nathan was College and Career Readiness Coordinator for the Madison Consolidated School Corporation. Previously he served as Executive Director of Jefferson County Industrial Development Corporation, and Economic Development Director for the city of Bloomington, Indiana. After graduation from Grinnell College, Nathan was selected as a Governor’s Fellow and worked in the Department of Commerce in the administration of Governor Evan Bayh. He pursued graduate studies (ABD) in political science at the University of California, Davis.

Nathan is survived by his wife, Kathryn Gold Hadley, professor of sociology at Hanover College; his parents, David and Sheridan Hadley of Crawfordsville, IN; sister Andrea Vermeulen (husband Eric); nephews Jake, Griffin, and Owen Vermeulen of Brownsburg; his maternal grandmother, Helen R. Long; maternal aunt Sydney K. Long; paternal uncle, Robert Eric Hadley of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and his much loved pugs, Jimbo and Bazbo. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents J. Edwin and Anne K. Hadley and maternal grandfather John Kell Long.

Nathan is past president of the board of Girls Inc in Madison and currently served as its treasurer. He was passionate about cooking and loved fly fishing, the outdoors, and golf. Tennis, at which he was accomplished, not so much. Since leaving Grinnell College in 1993, Nathan never missed the annual Super Bowl weekend gathering of his best Grinnell buddies whom he first met during their first year in Rawson Hall.

A celebration of Nathan’s life will take place at 11 a.m., Sunday, June 11, in THE RED BICYCLE HALL, 125 E. Main Street, Madison, Indiana. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Girls Inc, Madison, IN, or the DiFei Liu ’93 Memorial Scholarship at Grinnell College, Grinnell, IA.
