Joan Elizabeth Long, age 88, of Hanover, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at her residence in Hanover, Indiana. Born August 5, 1928 in Jefferson County, Indiana, she was the daughter of William Martin "Willie" and Ruth Taylor Hardy.
In August 1946, she was united in marriage to George Marvin Long and went home to can peaches for her honeymoon.
She retired from Hanover College in 2010 after nearly 49 years of service to take care of her husband. She spent most of that time as a baker. She always enjoyed working out in public, even in her son, Alan’s store. She enjoyed reading romance novels, yard sales, sewing, fishing, quilting, gardening and especially canning foods. She also collected old banks and rolling pins, and rescuing animals, including foxes, raccoons, chipmunks, and groundhogs.
She will be sadly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Pete Harrod of Madison; her sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Barb Long of Madison, and Arnold and Theresa Long of Hanover; her sister, Elizabeth Fleming of Calvert City, KY; her brothers: William Hardy of North Vernon, IN; Randall Hardy of Lexington, IN; her step-sisters: Theresa Handlon of Madison, and Mary Kloss of Madison; her step-brothers: Charles Kloss of Hanover and Scott Kloss of Madison; three grandchildren: Wendy Jo Pickett of Greenwood, IN, Audrey Nicole Long (Robert Sims) of San Diego, CA and Aaron Ray Long of Louisville, KY; and five great grandsons: Christian Meyer, Chandler Meyer, Anderson Pickett, Aiden Robert Sims and Jaxon Ray Sims.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one sister, June Phillips.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Lytle Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, 117 Holt Drive, Madison, IN with interment to follow in New Bethel Cemetery near Lexington.
Friends and family may call at the Lytle Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday, June 19, 2017, and from 10:00 AM until time of service on Tuesday.
