Life Story for John D. Cable

John D. Cable
John David Cable entered this life on June 13, 1948 in Madison, Indiana, the son of Arthur G. and Fauna L. (Ritchey) Cable. He was a 1966 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School and a 1970 graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington, where he was a charter member of the Gamma Chi chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi social fraternity. After college, he moved to California where he met his future wife LaVonne Caldwell and they were married there on December 17, 1977.

After the birth of their first three children, they returned to Madison. He managed the bookstore at Hanover College for many years before opening a Christian bookstore in Madison. He was also employed by the U.S. Postal Service as postmaster of the Bethlehem Post Office in Clark County, Indiana. He was taught watch and clock repair by his friend and mentor, Herb Anderson, and operated a watch and clock repair business from the mid-1990s until his death.

John passed from this life on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at his residence in Madison. He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVonne, his paternal grandparents, Colonel and Julia (Hobbs) Cable, his mother, his maternal grandparents, Everett and Mary (McHenry) Ritchey, his Ritchey uncles and cousin Robert Ritchey, Paul Ritchey and James “Jim” Ritchey, and several Cable aunts and uncles including Garrett Cable and his wife Joy, whom he cherished.

He is survived by his five children and their spouses, Penelope Cable of Brandenburg, Kentucky, Christian and Jenny Cable, Anastasia “Tasia” and Keith Chilton, India Cable, all of Madison, Indiana, and Dagmar “Mercy” and Clay Cobb of Nicholasville, Kentucky, and his grandchildren Jubilee Burnham, Xandria Cable, Landon Bible, Sameh McCormick, David and Seth Chilton, and Everett Cobb. He was an avid reader and enjoyed collecting books, antiques, and classic car memorabilia. He was interested in history, and was a long-time member of the Jefferson County Historic Society, Historic Madison, Inc., and Cornerstone, and served as president of Cornerstone. He was active at Christ Episcopal Church and served as secretary, treasurer, and clerk of the vestry at various times, as well as serving as a chalice bearer.

Funeral services with the Rite of Burial will be at Christ Episcopal Church, on the corner of Mulberry and Third Streets, Madison on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 2:00 p.m., conducted by The Reverend Evelyn Wheeler and Reverend Randy Crutchfield.
