Life Story for Geneva Oak Andress

Geneva Oak Andress
Geneva Oak Andress, age 94, of Madison, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at The Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison. Born April 9, 1923 in Jefferson County, Indiana, she was the daughter of Addison "Hoss" and Thelma (Sherman) Oak.

Mrs. Andress grew up in Manville where her parents owned a grocery store, and graduated from Central High School in 1941. She was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in World War II, and was honorably discharged as a Storekeeper First Class on November 30, 1945.

On May 25, 1945, she was united in marriage to Harold "Ho" Andress.

She worked as a bookkeeper for The Madison Courier in the 1950's and with the Richard M. Johnson Insurance Agency for nine years. She then became the first court appointed probate commissioner of Jefferson County, having been appointed in 1970 by the late Honorable Paul R. Schnaitter, and served for seventeen years. She was also the first woman political party chairman in Jefferson County and held every office in the Democratic Central Committee and the Democratic Women's Organization over a period of thirty years.

In 1985, she sponsored a drive to build a new animal shelter to be used by both the City of Madison and County of Jefferson. After the death of her son in 1987, the Jefferson County Commissioners created a trust fund in his memory to help support the animal shelter.

Mrs. Andress was a member of the Manville Christian Church, Democrat Party, American Legion Post #9 and a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans.

She will be sadly missed by her cousins, David Sherman of Madison and Rinda Oak of New Albany, Indiana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on March 30, 2001, and one son, Jerry E. Andress on January 10, 1987.

The Honor Guard of Jefferson Post #$9, American Legion will conduct graveside services at 10:00 AM Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1415 North Gate Road, Madison.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Jerry E. Andress Memorial Animal Shelter Endowment. Contributions may be made at any of the Lytle Funeral Homes & Cremation Service locations.

Lytle Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Main Street Chapel, 423 West Main Street, Madison, is in charge of the arrangements.
