James E. “Jimmy” Simmons, age 78, of Vevay, Indiana, passed away on Friday, January 5, 2018 at King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison. Born January 31, 1939 in Henry County, Kentucky, he was the son of Robert D. and Lorraine (Duvall) Simmons.
Mr. Simmons worked for many years for U.S. Shoe Corp. until 2002, and retired from Pilot Industries in North Vernon as a machine operator.
On June 2, 1960, he was united in marriage to Mary A. Jewell at the Brooksburg Baptist Church.
He was a member of Union Baptist Church at Lamb, where he a former moderator and currently assistant moderator, the Scottsburg Kiwanis Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #1969, Jefferson Post #9, American Legion, where he was a former member of the Honor Guard, and the Madison Moose Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, especially in Canada, and traveling with family to the Smokey Mountains. He also played Santa Claus for many years at his church and other events and private homes.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Mary; one brother, Carroll “Tommy” Simmons of Madison; cousins Mary and Bill Jewell of Vevay; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Bobby Simmons; one sister, Sharon Bliton; and one nephew.
The Reverend Michael Barnes will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at the Lytle Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, 117 Holt Drive, Madison, with interment to follow in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Madison.
Friends and family may call at the Lytle Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, January 9, 2018, and from 10:00 AM until time of service on Wednesday.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to Union Baptist Church. Contributions may be made at any of the Lytle Funeral Homes & Cremation Service locations.
