Bernard C. "Bird Dog" Melton, age 85, of Madison, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Born February 25, 1932 in Madison, Indiana, he was the son of Bernard and Nora (Crafton) Melton. Mr. Melton joined the United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict. He retired from the bar business having owned and operated Bill's Place. On November 22, 1971, he was united in marriage to Freda J. Johnson. He was a member of the American Legion, Jefferson Post #9 and the former Eagles Lodge. His hobbies and interests included playing cards, hunting, fishing, horse racing, gardening, Cincinnati Reds baseball, IU Basketball and telling stories..
He will be sadly missed by his daughter, GiGi Straub of Madison and Dawn Davis, and her husband, Mark of Madison; his sons, Charles Melton of Madison, Sam Melton, and his wife, Cathy of Madison, Dale Fisher, and his wife, Melissa of Madison, Sam Fisher of Madison, Rodney Fisher, and his wife, Julie of Madison, and Bernard "Bernie" Fisher of Madison; his sisters: Jenny Ann Barron of Madison, and Katie McKay, and her husband, Mark of Brooksburg, Indiana; his grandchildren: Jill Banks, Tyler Melton, Andrew Melton, Isaac Melton, Seth Melton, Lyle Everett, Jenny Straub, Amy Straub Nelson, Sheila Simmons, Justin Oliver, Joshua Mace, Ashley Long, Collin Fisher, Kristen Valenti, Dylan Fisher, Braxton Melton, and Bode Melton; and his great grandchildren: Daniel, Devin, Dylan, Madison, Owen, Evelyn, Bryce, Heidi, Nora, Sam, Sarah, Peyton, Carson, Candace, Nyaliah, Zaebuah, Conner, Evelyn Jeanette, Emily, Tyler, Madisyn, Lucas and Jacob..
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Freda Melton, daughter, Rotha Jeanette Fisher, sister, Janie Hunt, and brother, Don Ashley, granddaughter, Margo Melton, and great granddaughter, Shay Melton.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday March 10, 2018 at the Springdale Cemetery. Full Military honors will be conducted by the Honor Guard of the American Legion, Jefferson Post #9.
